One of the worst things to deal with is traffic in a morning rush hour so to honor that fun memory, I put together my favorite morning shift patterns:
You're going fast, and you think you're only going to go faster, so you shift up. Then right after shifting up, traffic slows, so you shift right back down. But then traffic slows more. So you shift down again. The 1 up and 2 down is a classic.
You've done the 1 up and 2 down several times. And you know traffic may slow, so you stretch the gear out more. The engine can handle more RPMs. Its a range of RPMs for each gear, so let it work. Man, these RPMs are getting higher. Man, it really looks like traffic is really flowing. Thus, you shift up, engine and RPMs are happy. Then of course traffic slows down right after that. And you shift down. And traffic keeps slowing, so you shift down again. The delay 1 up and 2 down is such a joy.
And other times, traffic is going, so you shift up, and happy days, it still moves. Thus, you shift up again, it really is moving now. Oh wait, we're slowing down, now. Shift down. And slowing down more. Shift down. Back to where we started. Wait, there's more. Shift down. Brake. Stop. Traffic is stopped. The 2 up and all the way back down has got to my favorite. But hey at least, its better than 1 up and all the way down, which also happens.
On a related note, I never realized how much I'd learn about throttle control and general slow moving bike control when riding a bike on the interstate during morning rush hour.
Happy rides!
Bill
